Ⅰ. Teaching aims By the end of the lesson, Ss should be able to: 1.

totally grasp the main idea of each part of the funny story 2.

develop an ability of predicting an unknown listening material 3.

gain some pleasure from the funny story 4.

express his or her feelings towards a funny story Ⅱ. Teaching important points To get Ss to grasp the main ideas of each piece of listening material Ⅲ. Teaching difficult points 1.

to get Ss to guess the new words that they come across 2.

to get Ss to express one’s feelings towards a story Ⅳ. Teaching methods Task-Based Language Teaching, discussion, listening, speaking Ⅴ. Teaching procedures Step 1

Lead—in Arouse the Ss’ attention by asking a few questions related to the topic. T: Good morning, everybody! Ss: Good morning, sir! T: So far, we have got to know some English jokes and stories. Do you enjoy them? Ss:Yes, they are so fascinating. T: I am so glad to hear it. And I am going to give you one more story today, but I am not telling you now. Instead I would like to ask you a few questions. 1.

What would happen to you if you drink too much alcohol? 2.

Can fruits be used to make alcohol? 3.

What would happen to an animal if it drinks too much alcohol? S1: If I drink too much alcohol, I will definitely be drunk. I think I will have to sleep for a couple of days. T: Ha-ha, very funny. Now, who’d love to answer the rest questions? S2: Of course, fruits can be used to make alcohol, like grape wine. As for the last question, I think an animal will react as a man does if too much alcohol were drunk. T: Right. Thank you so much.

Step 2

Predicting

Giving some key words to the Ss to predict what the story will be about. T: Now I am going to give you some words related to the funny story that you are looking forward to listening to. They are: Mary (the wife), John (the husband), plum(李子), jam(果酱), pan(平底锅), drunken, chickens. Work in pairs to predict the story by putting the key words together. Two minutes. Here you go. Two minutes later. T: Time is up. Who’d love to share with us? S1: Here. Ah, Mary and John bought some plum wine for their chickens to drink, as a result, all their chickens were drunken. S2: But you just left out two words: jam and pan.

S1: Oh, yes. But that’s all I can think of. T: It doesn’t matter. Anyway, you did a great job. What else? S3: I think Mary and John made some plum jam in a pan for the chickens to test whether they will get drunken after eating the jam. T: Wow, you are so imaginative.

Step 3

Checking Listen to the whole story to check if the Ss’ predictions were right. T: I am sure you must be looking forward to hearing the story now. The story is divided into two parts, let’s listen to them all twice and then check if you were right.

Step 4

The main idea of Part 1 Listen to Part 1 for a third time to grasp the main idea. T: Is the story funny? Have you really got the content? Let’s listen for a third time to get the main idea. Ss: It is very funny. (After listening to Part 1) T: Who’d love to tell us the main idea? S1: Mary made some plum jam but left some on the table because she had to go to see her sick mother. Her husband, John, finding some dirty mess in the pan, threw it to the chickens. S2: Almost the same as hers T: OK, very good! As is heard, Mary made some jam but left some on the table because she had to go to look after her sick mother. A few days later, her husband, John, knowing nothing about the jam, threw it into the chicken yard. Step 5

Detailed-listening for Part 1 Have a further understanding by answering the following two questions.

T: Now, I want you to listen for the last time and then answer the following two questions. 1.

What exactly happened to her mother?

2.

What did her husband think when he saw the pan? (After listening to Part 1) S1: Let me answer the first one. Her mother had a car accident. S2: He thought Mary forgot to clean the pan. T: Excellent! Step 6

The main idea of Part 2 This time, listen to Part 2 to grasp the main idea. T: Listen to Part 2 twice and tell us what it mainly talks about. (After listening to Part 2) S1: She saw the chickens behaving strangely and find out that John has given the jam to the chickens, which made her angry and not knowing what to do with the drunken chickens. T: Exactly! Step 7

Detailed---listening for Part 2 To get the Ss to know some details of Part 2. 1)

Put the following sentences in order. T: Read the following sentences and then put them into correct order after listening to Part 2.

4

Mary got angry with John.

2

Mary saw the chickens behaving strangely.

5

John was sorry.

7

The chickens enjoyed the jam.

6

John said he thought the jam was porridge.

3

Mary looked at the red mess on the ground.

8

John said the chickens were drunk.

1

Mary came home. 2) Fill in the blacks. T: listen to Part 2 again and fill in the following blacks. “You

my jam,”

she shouted. “Oh,

what it was,”

he said. “I

am

but I thought it was

which had gone bad in hot weather. The chickens have

the jam, but it is made them

.”

Suggested answers: threw away, that’s, sorry, porridge, enjoyed, drunk Step 8

Presenting the whole story

Listen to the whole story by looking at the screen, and then ask whatever you can’t understand.

The Story of the Drunken Chickens

Part 1

Mary Smith looked at the beautiful ripe plums. They would make lovely jam. When she had finished the cooking, she filled all her empty jam jars and left the rest of the jam in the pan. She would put it in the fridge when it was cooler. But just then the telephone rang; her mother was in hospital after a car accident. Mary picked up her bag and ran out of the house.

Some days later, her husband, John, came home from a business trip. He had been travelling all day and felt like having a drink and a piece of cake. As he came into the kitchen he saw a pan with a dark red mess inside it, he lifted it up and smelled it. It smelled bad. Mary must have forgotten to clean this pan, he thought. So he poured all the jam into the chicken yard and cleaned the pan. Then feeling comfortable, he began to eat a piece of cake.

Part 2

When Mary returned, she noticed the chickens behaving strangely. They were running round the yard as if they were sick. She saw the dark red mess on the ground and went closer. When she saw a plum stone she went into the kitchen. Her husband was reading a newspaper at the table. Angrily Mary rushed up to him. "You threw away my jam," she shouted, "Oh, that's what it was," he said. "I'm sorry but I thought it was porridge which had gone bad in the hot weather. “Good heavens!”

said Mary. "That must be the jam I left in the pan, but why didn't you threw it in the dustbin " John laughed, "It was a mistake. However, the chickens have enjoyed the jam, except that it has made them drunk. What are we going to do with these drunken chickens?”

Step 9

Making a dialogue To get the Ss to practice speaking T: Working in pairs to discuss whether the story mentioned above is funny, using the following words and expressions. Three minutes. How wonderful! I am pleased we both like …

I felt happy because …

What fun! It surprises me that…

I don’t laugh at that kind of thing because…

It is (not) very amusing that…

I (don’t) enjoy this very much because…

Ss’

dialogues may vary, but the given words and expressions should be involved as much as possible. Sample answer: S1: What fun! I enjoyed that story. I always laugh at that kind of thing. S2: Me too. I am pleased we both like the same kind of funny stories. S1: The punchline was good. You were wandering what would happen. So I am happy that it all turned out well in the end.

S2: It surprises me that John didn’t see the plum stone if Mary did. S1: That’s because Mary did the cooking, but john didn’t look at the jam carefully. He just thought it was a mess and threw it away. S2: I think it is very amusing and always try to read stories like that. They make me smile. S1: OK. Let me tell you one more story. It is about…. Ⅵ
