Contrastive reading of Under the sea Design Concept: The class includes two parts: intensive reading and extensive reading. In part I, the teacher asks students to translate the three paragraphs excerpted from

A new dimension of life

and to explore the beauty of the ocean. Then, in part II, students are allowed to scan the extra reading material, which mainly talks about the ocean pollution, to understand its main meaning. After reading, the teacher lead students to think and discuss questions: as students, facing such severe marine pollution, what can we do?

Teaching aims: (1) students can translate the paragraphs accurately (2) to arouse their focus on the marine pollution and sense of social responsibility

to help students taste the difference between Chinese and English

(2) to help students translate accurately and authentically Teaching procedures: Step I: Warming up

Play a video concerning the wonderful ocean for the students to increase students’ interests. Step II: Intensive reading Firstly, students read these three paragraphs loudly and then work in groups to translate them. After that, the teacher will ask some

students to translate some key sentences on the blackboard and answer a question: Could you use some adjectives to describe the ocean? The teacher write their answers down. Step III: Extensive reading Students are asked to scan and skip the extra reading material to complete some exercises in order to know the severe ocean pollution. Then, the teacher will play another video concerning about ocean pollution for students. Step IV: Group discussion

Facing such problems, as students, what do you want to say? And what can we do for the ocean or for our environment? The teacher will provide some useful words and phrases to help students.
