Grammar Noun clauses as Predicative 授课教师：刘雅丽

Step 1 Revision Play the game of “Passing the message” to review objective clause. Show the same written passage to the first person in each paragraph. Ask the person to pass the message on orally in indirect speech as quickly as possible. The first team that finishes it must write the message on the blackboard. If she/he is right, that team has won the game. Example: Message: There will be no homework tonight. S1: The teacher said that there would be no homework tonight.

Underline the predicatives in the following sentences. 1)The person stood in front of you just now is

my headmaster. 2)The door remained closed. 3)Mary’s daily job is cleaning the house.

4)The problem is confusing. 5)The problem is when we can get a pay rise. 2.Underline all the examples with predicative clauses in the play. 3.Let’s read one more example from a movie.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery,

but today is a gift. That is why it is called the “present”.

4.What is predicative?

It is usually coming after a verb such as be, become, get, seem, look.

“建议”或者是“命令”之类的词如advice, suggestion, proposal, order, plan, idea等, 那么从句中的动词通常用________。

Step 3 Practice Group work

Translate the following sentences into English. Ask students write their answers on a piece of paper and then show to the class. 1.这是鲁迅住过的地方。(where) 2.他看起来好像病了。(as though) 3.那是我们应该做的。(what) 4.我的计划是我们今晚开会。

5.他的建议是我们明天一早就出发。
