A Teaching Design for NSEFC Book9 Unit 2 Sailing the Oceans

一、教学内容分析

本单元的中心话题是围绕“航海、发现探索未知的大陆”，其教学内荣主要涉及到海洋航行、人类早期的航海技术、中国历史上最著名的航海家郑和、辛巴达的第一次冒险航行等。整个单元的语言技能和语言知识都是依据“航海、发现探索未知大陆”这一中心而设计。是普及航海科普知识与航海历史相结合的文章，文章结构比较复杂，单词专业性强，教学难度大。

二、学情分析

本校是一所农村中学，英语水平普遍比较差，成绩好的学生不多。学习Book 9 Unit 2的主要目的与其他单元的目的一样，主要是扩大高三学生的词汇量，增加学生的阅读量，特别是难度较大的课文阅读。

三、目标分析

本节可得主要目的：1.学习本节课中出现的单词、短语与句型。2.能够复述阅读Sailing the ocean 第一部分的Using nature to help people sail the oceans. 四、教学难点：

How to help the students master the new words How to make the students understand the navigational skills/use nature to help sail the oceans

The First Period

Class: Class Five, Senior Three Teaching aims and demands:

Help the students to grasp the following items

Step1 Vocabulary learning(using a computer to present the words)

Step 2 Lead-in

Get the students to know that the early navigators had contributed a lot to today’s development.

T: It has been a long history for our human beings to discovered the world, to become closely connect with people around the world, and even make our world like a village. From what aspects can you feel these great changes?

Ss: by internet/by modern media/……

T: What advanced equipment you know are used to assist the seamen

Ss: GPS/radar/ computer……

T: Do you think what they were used in ancient time?

S: They used nature and some simple instruments.

Step 3 Reading (page 1)

1). Ask Ss to look through the text and let Ss to know why the voyage of travellers did so well even without the modern navigational aids.

2).Ask Ss to find the answers to Ex.4in comprehending and questions givens.

Using the nature

(1) To find the ship’s position at sea a sailor used the North Star and the sun

(2). A sailor knew that land was nearby if he saw a specil cloud formation, nesting birds return to land and their nests, fog gather over a certain area, and also if the seaweeds he found was fresh and smalled strongly.

(3). Sailor used the wind which blew the same direction as their ship went, and

also a certain tide and currents to increase their speed.

3). Read the text again and answer the 3 questions. Show question to the students.

(1).Where do these materials come from?

(2). What did the early navigator used to help them navigate?

(3). What natural objects were used to assist the navigation?

4) Explain to the students language and difficult points

(1). We may well wonder how seamen explored the oceans before latitude and longitude made it possible to plot a ship’s position on a map.
