Unit1 Cultural Relics Using language reading and writing

Teaching aims:1)To read the text for information. 2)To have a debate and express one’s opinion on the subject. 3) To write a report on debate. (argumentation) Teaching difficulties and key points: 1) To have a debate and write a report on it. 2) Enable the Ss to master writing skills of argumentation.

Teaching Procedures: step 1 Reading Get the Ss to reading the passage and find out the writer’s opinion about what should be done with a cultural relic that has been found. (1).Who does Johann think that the Amber Room should belong to?( His idea) (2). Why does he think so? (His reason) step 2. Discussion Get Ss to have a discussion in groups and express their own opinions on this matter with the help of useful expressions. Do you agree with Johann? Who do you think the Amber Room belongs to? Useful expressions: What do you think? What do you think of …?

I think/don’t think that …

In my opinion …First, …what’s more, … besides, …, in addition, …

step 3. Class debate Divide Ss into two groups and have a debate.

If you happen to find some cultural relics, should you keep them or give them to the government? Give your reasons.

step 4.Introduction Get Ss to read an argumentation and analyze the structure of the

passage as well as learn some useful sentences and patterns. Write a report about your debate, using the following guidance. Para. 1: State the question.

Para. 2: Give the ideas that agree with the question and the reasons.

Para. 3: Give the ideas that disagree with the question and the reasons.

Para. 4: Give your opinion and the result of the class vote.

step 5. Writing Provide tips for the structure and key points of writing, get Ss to write a report on the debate, using the guidance. step 6.Marking After the students finish writing, ask them exchange their writing with their desk mates, and correct the mistakes for each other. If they have any questions when marking, they can ask the teacher for help. 7. Presentation After the students finish checking the mistakes, the teacher, with the Ss together, will mark one composition in the class so Ss can check their own compositions. At last, ask Ss to hand in the compositions, the teacher will mark all the compositions once again, in case of any mistakes which are left.
