2 Learning about language: important language points

教材分析

This is the second teaching period of this unit. The teacher can first check students’

homework and offer chances for students to review what they learned during the first period. Then lead in the new lesson. The emphasis of this period will be placed on the important new words, expressions and sentence patterns in the past Warming up, Pre-reading, Reading and Comprehension. In order to make students understand these important points thoroughly, we can first get students to understand their meanings in the context, then give some explanations about them, and later offer some practices to make students master their usages. 教学重点

Enable students to grasp the usages of such important new words and expressions as struggle, expand, therefore, export, thanks to, rid...of, be satisfied with, would rather, etc. 2.

Get students to master the patterns “This special strain of rice makes it possible to produce one-third more of the crop in the same fields. ”and “Using his hybrid, farmers are producing harvest twice as large as before.”

Let students learn how to use struggle and would rather. 2.

Let students learn the following important useful sentence patterns:

Although he is one of China’s most famous scientists, Yuan Longping considers himself a farmer, for he works the land to do his research. (consider +O. + n, for-clause) 2)

Step 1 Revision 1.

Check the homework exercises. 2.

Ask some students to talk about Dr Yuan Longping and his super hybrid rice.

Step 2 Practice for useful words and expressions 1.

Turn to P12. Go through the exercises in Discovering useful words and expressions with students and make sure they know what to do.

2.

Give them several minutes to finish the exercises. They first do them individually, then discuss and check them with their partners. 3.

Check the answers with the whole class and explain the problems they meet where necessary.

Step 3 Studying important language points

For 后面可以跟分句，表示原因，但和because不同。Because是从属连词，引导状语从句，表示直接的原因; for 只是顺便带出一个事实作为陈述的理由，并不是直接的原因，也不能放在句首。

E.g. We found it pleasant to work with her.

finding ways to grow more rice 是动名词短语，

在句中作主语。动名词或动名词短语作主语时，谓语动词通常使用单数形式。

Step 5 Using words, expressions and patterns

Let students do the exercises in Using words and expressions on P49. 1.

Go through the exercises with students and make sure they know what to do. 2.

Several minutes for students to finish them individually, and then discuss and check them with their partner. 3.

Check the answers with the whole class. 4.

If time permits, explain the problems students meet where necassary.

Step 6 Homework 1.

Finish the workbook exercises. 2.

Review and learn the new words and expressions by heart.
