This lesson is from PEP Grade 8 Book 1 Unit 4 “What’s the best movie theater”? The type of this lesson is

writing. Students has already learned superlative degree and can express their own ideas with the simple or complex sentences. They will be able to writing something.

Knowledge Aim:

a. Use superlative degree in the writing .

b. Learn some writing methods.

Ability Aim: Be able to introduce a city using proper language, and write their own passages. Emotion Aim:

Generalize their hometown, and evoke the love to the hometown.

Key point:

Get the usage of superlative degree and write a passage with it freely. Difficult point:

a. Use illustrative methods in writing.

b. Enrich simple sentences.

Teaching Procedure

Step I Lead-in

Introduce my friend Mike to the students. He is a boy in London. There is a

Greenwood park（picture）near his house. He always enjoys the time there.

Show some pictures with the words: crowded, creative, good, fast, quietly to describe what the park is like. Then practice these words in superlative degree. Step II Reading

①Fill in the blanks. Check answers.

②Guide students to find the passage is an exposition.

Introduce the features of a good exposition. a.Reading for content

Ask students to read the passage and find out the main idea, ask students “why does the writer go to Greenwood Park?”

To meet friends. To see the street performers.

Proper content To read or relax in one of the small coffee shop. b. Reading for structure

Ask students to find out the topic sentence, the body, and the ending sentence . Draw the conclusion，the structure of this passage: 总-分-总

c.Reading for writing methods

Show students the sentence “Some people think they are boring, but I think they are the most creative people.” → comparison作比较

Introduce more exposition methods to students:

statistics, illustration, contrast

Give example sentences for each exposition method. d. Reading for accumulation Work in groups, ask students to find good sentences and words in this passage, they may find the sentences like:

“I always finish my breakfast the fastest on Saturdays because I want to get to Greenwood Park before 10:00a.m.to meet my friends.” ---原因状语从句

Step III Before writing (3b) ①

I’ll show some pictures of Harbin’s famous things/ places. Ask students to choose the ones they like best, and tell their reasons, then finish the chart of (3b). Ask some students to read their chart using the sentence like：

“I like...best, because...”

②Group work : 4 student in one group. Use the writing methods or sentence patterns we just learned to enrich their sentences, then show it. Step IV While-writing

Show students the criterion评分标准.

Give students time to write about Harbin and the best places/things there.

Practice A :Finish the whole passage or Practice B:Finish a paragraph

Teaching Procedure

Step V After-writing Show their writings to the class, ask students to find out the advantages and disadvantages of the writing.

Step VI Homework

Write about a city you traveled to before. Introduce the best things/places there.
